Bill O’Brien spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of artists, writers, and musicians in Santa Monica. Bill’s program, sponsored by California Lawyers for the Arts, was entitled, “Intellectual Property on the Internet: An Advanced Seminar for Artists, Writers, and Others Who Create and Use Digital Content.” Topics addressed included:

• What is “fair use” of copyrighted material?
• Avoiding liability for unintentional infringement
• Take-down notices and “safe harbors” under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
• Use of trademarks on the Internet
• Selection and protection of website names and URLs
• Cybersquatting and domain-name disputes
